Fortnite and Travis Scott PResent: Astronomical

Description: Fortnite and Travis Scott Present: Astronomical was a collaborative event between rapper Travis Scott and Fortnite. Using Fortnite as a platform, Travis performed several of his musical numbers and then unveiled THE SCOTT’S, a new collaboration single with fellow rapper Kid Cudi in game. Immediately after the event, Travis launched a new merchandise line online. This event served as the premier for both the merchandise line, the single with Kid Cudi.

Execution: I served as the only analyst on the Fortnite and Travis Scott Present: Astronomical event. This was the first in game event we ran during the Covid-19 pandemic. As such, the biggest impact to the execution of the event was transitioning from in office work to working from home. Given the pandemic occurring in the middle of the event dev cycle, we actually had to context switch between this event and another event as our roadmap changed to adjust with the pandemic.

The event itself had a very large scope, lasting almost 10 minutes. The addition of a third party stakeholder added increased testing needs as our goals were shared with team Travis. The event was also run via a re-run system, with multiple showings occurring. This caused an increase opportunity for risk, as players would have opportunities to replay the event and try things they hadn’t tried the first time. Overall the event was a monumental success, breaking our concurrent user record at more than 12.3 million players, and over 27.7 million players total enjoyed the event via the multiple showings.
