The Device
Event Time: June 15th, 2020
Description: The Device was a season end event for Chapter 2 Season 2. It was a narrative driven event that continued to expand the story of Fortnite that we’ve been telling throughout the game. Players first saw an attempt to push back the storm from a mysterious device built by Midas, only to see those attempts fall unsuccessful. Players were then teleported to a mysterious office, only to hear even more references to “the loop.” The event ended with a massive flood of water, which brought us into our new season and the Fortnite island flooded.
Execution: The Device was another event that was impacted by Covid-19, and we had a shorter dev cycle on it because of context switching. As such, we had a core analyst team of three QA Analysts for The Device. I drove the overall testing strategies and overall QA vision for the project, and the core analyst team as a whole was able to divide out work and task the asks appropriately.
This event was relatively unique in that it had a long lasting impact on the core Battle Royale ecosystem. The Storm wall changed to a flood wall, and was present in every match for the remainder of Chapter 2 Season 2. Given, the core analyst team was focusing testing efforts on the event lead up beats, the event itself, and the post event experience. We were able to develop several test cases, testing roadmaps, and onboard a new third party team to accomplish our quality goals in an unusually short amount of time. The event was tremendously well received, and over 20 million people consumed the event in some form.
